AMD in 2006
Advance Micro Devices plans to migrate its entire desktop processor range to a new 940 pin "M2" socket in 2006. The new Socket 940 desktop chips will be the first made by AMD to support the DDR2 memory standard. Next year will also see the introduction of a 1207 pin "F" socket for AMD's new Opteron 200 and 800 processors. Signalling that the firm is preparing move to quad-core chips, which are expected to arrive in 2007.
